The 24 Best Wine Subscription Boxes

Last Updated: December 4, 2017

At WineClubReviews.net we’ve been reviewing wine subscriptions (and only wine subscriptions) for 8 years. We’ve reviewed more than 100 wine subscription services and seen dozens of them come and go over the years.

You may have noticed other websites talking about wine subscriptions. Most of those sites are not primarily about wine clubs or even wine — they just occasionally write about wine subscription boxes. Sadly, not all of those sites are knowledgeable about the wine that gets delivered or what really sets these services apart from one another.

Unlike most of those reviews sites, we’ve tasted at least one shipment — sometimes dozens — from every wine box service we review. Learn more about how we evaluate wine subscriptions and why you should trust us.

First and foremost, a wine subscription service is about the wine, but if it were only about the wine, you could just pop over to your local store and pick up a few bottles when you needed them. Wine subscriptions exist to add that extra layer of convenience (they get delivered right to your door, of course) and more importantly, professional curation of wines so you get the best among the tens of thousands of wines produced every year. Naturally with all of our experience in this area, we have some professional tips on how to choose a wine subscription.

Here are our picks for the best wine subscriptions in 2017. Like other subscription review sites, we’ll get paid if you click our links and join or give a wine subscription.

1. Winc Wine Subscription Box

Shipment details: Starting at $52 / month for 4 bottles, shipping is included

Winc Shipment

What’s special about Winc:

Is the wine any good? Yes — why else would Whole Foods, boutique hotels, and small wine stores around the country sell it, too? While most of the wine is a great deal at $13, they offer a good selection of wine in the $14-40 price range. We recommend spending $18-25 on your red wines to really get the most bang for your buck. A significant portion of their wines come from California, but they offer wines from around the world, too (mostly New World wine regions).

Are there any deals? Yes. If you buy through our website, you can get $30 in wine credits toward your first order. That’s more than 50% off and you can’t get a better deal from Winc. That’s even better than their Black Friday deal.

Giving a gift? You’ll be buying gift credits and your recipient will pick their own wines once they redeem them.

2. The Case Club from The California Wine Club

Shipment details: $156 for 12 bottles, shipping is $14; Get it monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Case Club Shipment

What’s special about The California Wine Club:

Is the wine any good? Yes — they focus on artisanal wines produced primarily in California. Their Case Club aggregates selections from several of their wine subscription options. In each shipment 8-12 bottles are from California and 1-4 bottles will come from Oregon, Washington, or their International Series.

Are there any deals? No, not on this subscription but there’s a really good reason why. To reward you for buying a case at a time, The California Wine Club has slashed their normal subscription prices in half. If you were to buy six subscriptions of their two-bottle clubs, you’d pay $240 for the wine and $84 for shipping! Since they’ve already baked in a 47.5% discount, they don’t offer deals on the Case Club.

Giving a gift? This subscription isn’t set up with pre-paid options for gifting so you’ll have to remember to cancel yourself.

3. The Doppelgängers from Plonk Wine Club

Shipment details: As low as $59.99 / month for two bottles or $109.99 / month for four bottles, shipping is included.

Plonk Doppelgängers Shipments

What’s special about Plonk’s Doppelgängers? Each of these three subscriptions — Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc — features one of the named varietal and one wine of a similar taste and character, usually made of a different grape and from a different wine region. This is a very cool to way to discover new varieties and regions.

Is the wine any good? Yes. The wines are selected by Plonk’s proprietor, Etty Lewensztain, who has an excellent reputation for her killer palate.

Are there any deals? New members can save $10 with coupon code NEWMEMBER and there’s sometimes a deal around major holidays. You do get a free double-jointed waiters’ corkscrew in your first shipment and if you’re like us, once you try it, you’ll never go back to your lever corkscrew.

Giving a gift? You’ll order a pre-paid gift subscription and the wine will merrily arrive at their door.

What’s special about The California Wine Club:

Is the wine any good? At this price it better be! Of all of our wine subscriptions, this one is our favorite. We love a great bottle of wine to enjoy as a shared experience, whether we bring it to a restaurant or we’re cooking at home. It’s pricey, but these wines represent the best California wine can offer.

5. 90+ Wine Club from Wired For Wine®

Shipment details: $169.97 / quarter for 12 bottles, shipping is included. Delivered quarterly, choose red, white or a mix of both.

Wired For Wine® Shipment

What’s special about Wired For Wine®?

Is the wine any good? Yes, surprisingly good for $14 a bottle! We were so impressed with this wine subscription when the first box arrived. An eclectic mix from around the world, varieties and wine regions. It was a great way to find better French wines than what’s heavily-promoted by the importers.

Are there any deals? Nope. These wines are already discounted so no extra deals are available.

Giving a gift? This wine subscription does not offer pre-paid memberships so if you give it as a gift you’ll have to put a reminder on your calendar to cancel.

That’s it! Those are the ONLY FIVE wine subscriptions that qualify as truly the best! If you didn’t find what you were looking for among the five best wine subscriptions, here are 19 more wine subscriptions rated 4.5 stars. They’re almost perfect and definitely worth your attention.

6. The Premier Series from The California Wine Club

Shipment details: $39.95 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is $14 extra. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

The Premier Series Shipment

What’s special about The California Wine Club:

Is the wine any good? Mostly, yes, it’s quite good. As you might imagine, The California Wine Club specializes in California-made wine and the Premier Series is their “entry level” subscription. At this price, $20 per bottle, we expect wine to be good, but we’re not expecting Silver Oak or Cakebread Cellars to show up in our packages. We don’t like superlatives when describing wine unless they are truly warranted — typically we find ourselves waxing poetic starting at the $40+ price-point.

Why not 5 stars? While the wine is very good, there has to be something that distinguishes entry-level wine subscriptions from their more-expensive brethren. Plus, if you choose white-only or red-only, you get two of the same wines in the box — we think they should be two different wines.

Are there any deals? Almost always, especially if you’re shopping our website. Because they change frequently, we recommend you check our review page for current offers.

Giving a gift? It's is available as a pre-paid subscription. The first shipment includes all kinds of extras for your favorite wine lover and the wines come wrapped in fancy paper.

7. Plonk Wine Club

Shipment details: As low as $54.99 / month for two bottles, $94.99 / month for four bottles, or $249 / shipment for 12 bottles, shipping is included. Two-bottle shipments are delivered monthly, 12-bottle shipments are delivered monthly or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Plonk Wine Club Shipment

What’s special about Plonk Wine Club: This is a no-frills wine subscription that is 100% focused on getting you great wine at a great price. When you upgrade from two to four bottles, you actually get four different bottles in each shipment — this is unusual among wine subscriptions. We also like that each wine is paired with recipes from Food52.com and that the pairings are wine-specific, not just for a generic wine of that grape.

Also given the intense focus on wine selection, we’d like to see a little more detail about the wines themselves in the educational materials.

8. 89+ Subscription from Winecrasher

Shipment details: $49.99 / month for three bottles of white wine, $54.99 / month for three bottles of red wine, and $109.99 / month for six bottles of mixed red and white wine.

Winecrasher 89+ Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Winecrasher?

Is the wine any good? Mostly, yes, it’s quite good. We rather enjoyed the wines we received, an eclectic mix of reds and whites that included California, Spain, Rhone, thank goodness, a Rosé from Provence.

Why not 5 stars? While the wine is very good, there has to be something that distinguishes entry-level wine subscriptions from their more-expensive brethren.

Are there any deals? For you, yes! Save 25% on everything with our exclusive coupon WINECLUBREVIEWS.

Giving a gift? This wine subscription does not offer pre-paid memberships so if you give it as a gift you’ll have to put a reminder on your calendar to cancel.

9. Gold Series from The Gold Medal Wine Club

Shipment details: $39 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is $10.50 extra to most locations. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Gold Medal Gold Series Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Gold Medal Wine Club?

Is the wine any good? Mostly, yes, it’s quite good. They [claim to] only sell award-winning California wines. Why are we qualifying that? Well, the California part is true, but not every wine on their website has its credentials listed, and frankly we don’t think relying on award-winners from competitions are the best way to choose your wine — we’ve had enough “award-winning” wines that didn’t win us over to know better.

Why not 5 stars? The Gold Medal Wine Club does not have a top-tier satisfaction guarantee (as far as we’re concerned). They will replace “bad bottles” — meaning they’re corked or otherwise corrupted — but you can’t get wines replaced if you simply didn’t care for them.

Are there any deals? Yes! The wines are already priced below winery retail, but the aforementioned “Buy More, Save More” pricing structure means you can save when you upgrade to four bottles or buy a longer-term pre-paid subscription.

Giving a gift? Take advantage of our exclusive Gold Series Gift Package: They’ll get a bonus bottle of wine in their first shipment (a $24 value), which also comes in their artist-designed gift box (a $5.99 value), and a personalized greeting card. The wines arrive wrapped in organza gift bags.

10. The Napa Series from The Original Wine of the Month Club®

Shipment details: $49.99 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is extra and is based on your location. Delivered every other month. Choose red wine or a mix of red and white.

The Napa Series Subscription Shipment

What’s special about The Original Wine of the Month Club®? Well, as you might imagine, it’s the first one there ever was, started back in 1972 out of the back room at a pharmacy! The proprietor, Paul Kalemkiarian, is known for driving a hard bargain when buys those few wines that he thinks are good enough to sell in his club, and he passes those savings on to you (though maybe not in this Napa subscription).

Is the wine any good? Yes, this Napa wine subscription generally offers very good wine. Napa is a great wine region for more than just Cab, so we really like that this Napa club doesn’t offer jsut Cabernet Sauvignon. Expect pedigreed red blends and white wines, too (optional).

Why not 5 stars? While the wine is very good, we don’t feel the pricing is especially impressive.

Are there any deals? If you’re giving as a gift, you can enjoy an exclusive 10% discount with coupon code BESTWINE.

Giving a gift? Their quirky gift box comes free with gift orders, as do some bonus gifts in their first shipment.

11. Garagiste Series from The Gold Medal Wine Club

Shipment details: $75 / shipment for two bottles of mostly red wine or $85 for two bottles of red wine, shipping is $10.50 extra to most locations. Delivered every other month or quarterly.

Gold Medal Garagiste Series Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Gold Medal Wine Club?

Is the wine any good? Yes, it’s quite good but it’s also fun. The word Garagiste is in reference to tiny producers (making wine out of a “garage”) and for a curious wine drinker who wants to be in the know or get access to wine not available anywhere else (that also isn’t private labelled or bulk wine), this is a very cool wine subscription. You’ll discover California’s newest and smallest producers of Rhone varietals, Pinot Noir, and every kind of red blend imaginable.

Opt for their artist-designed gift box ($5.99) and a personalized greeting card. The wines arrive wrapped in organza gift bags.

12. Champagne Subscription from Henri’s Reserve

Shipment details: $146 / shipment for two bottles of grower Champagne, shipping is included. Delivered every other month or quarterly.

Champagne Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Henri’s Reserve?

Is the wine any good? OMG yes. Not that we have anything against the big famous Champagne houses (Veuve Clicquot, Moet & Chandon, Roederer, etc.) but we’re big fans of interesting and hand-crafted when it comes to wine. The Champagnes you’ll get in a subscription from Henri’s are imported and not sold at major retailers, and sometimes not anywhere else.

Why not 5 stars? As much as we love Henri’s Reserve and their Champagne subscription, we can’t help but feel the pricing isn’t really “members-only.” Now, if you’re going to splurge for this subscription, maybe that’s not important to you — so for you it might really be a 5-star wine club.

Are there any deals? No.

Giving a gift? They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions and lovely gift wrap for an even more impressive presentation.

13. Bubbles & Rosé from Vinley Market

Shipment details: $59 / month for two bottles, shipping is included.

Bubbles & Rosé Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Vinley Market? Vinley Market is a female-oriented brand. On the surface that means feminine packaging, but at it’s core it’s thinking more about what women want from a wine subscription in terms of wine selection and educational materials.

Is the wine any good? Yes, quite. The sommeliers who choose the wine for Vinley Market are interested in wines they like and that seem like a bargain compared to similarly priced wines. Additionally, this subscription is unique in its combination of sparkling and still rosé. We’d happily sign up for the Bubbles & Rosé subscription if we weren’t already receiving so much wine each month.

Why not 5 stars? We don’t feel like there is enough customization available. There should be four-bottle and 12-bottle subscription options in addition to quarterly shipments as an option.

Are there any deals? Yes. Save 10% on your first order at Vinley Market with coupon code WCR2017.

Giving a gift? They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions but no gift-wrap. You can include a custom gift message in the first shipment.

14. The World of Wine from Vinesse

Shipment details: $50 / shipment for three bottles or $105 / shipment for six bottles, shipping is extra. Delivered 3x per year, 4x per year, or 8x per year.

The World of Wine Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Vinesse?

Is the wine any good? Yes, mostly. The nature of the subscription is that each shipment focuses on a different wine region, so you’re not always going to love every bottle from every region. It’s a great way to learn about different wine regions around the world.

Why not 5 stars? The wine isn’t always awesome and the pricing doesn’t always seem like a deal.

Are there any deals? For you? Yes. Save $120 on your first shipment (six wines are only $9.75 each) and get two bonus bottles of a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir ($50 value). Another exclusive deal for our readers!

Giving a gift? They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions but no gift-wrap. You can include a custom gift message in the first shipment.

15. Wine Down Box

Shipment details: $70 / month for one bottle with professionally-paired cheese and charcuterie, shipping is included.

Wine Down Box Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Wine Down Box?

Is the wine any good? Yes, quite. And so are the pairings. Sometimes you read about a pairing and your eyebrow goes up as the skepticism runs through your mind — like our last shipment which paired a Merlot with garlic peppercorn cheese. Good pairings make both ingredients better and this fully did. The Barolo salami from Alle-Pia also helped round out the deliciousness (my mouth is watering as I type this).

Why not 5 stars? The pricing seems a little high for buying for yourself. As a gift, it’s a great price — $70 for a fun one-time wine gift or $210 for three months, but it’s a question mark as to whether the pairing expertise is worth the premium when buying for your own pleasure.

Are there any deals? Not usually. They’ve got a slew of holiday deals running this year, so check our full review for the latest.

Giving a gift? They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions and the impressive box makes a great presentation.

16. Wine Awesomeness

Shipment details: $45 / shipment for three bottles or $75 / shipment for six bottles, shipping is included. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Wine Awesomeness Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Wine Awesomeness?

Is the wine any good? Yes, surprisingly given the price point. Some of the competitor wine subscriptions in this price point leave a lot to be desired in terms of wine, but they’re doing a great job sourcing interesting wines and passing great savings along to their members.

Why not 5 stars? We’re not impressed with their lack of a substantial satisfaction guarantee and while the wine is good, it’s not going to change the way you think about wine or anything.

Are there any deals? Yes, there’s usually an introductory offer of some kind — either savings off your first box or a bonus bottle. Check our full review for the latest deals. Currently (as of December 2017) you can get your first box for just $29.

Giving a gift? They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions and the impressive box makes a great presentation.

17. The International Series from The California Wine Club

Shipment details: $65 / shipment for two bottles (the price varies when buying for yourself), shipping is $14 extra. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine or a mix of red and white.

The International Series Shipment

What’s special about The California Wine Club:

Is the wine any good? Mostly, yes, it’s quite good. Despite it’s name, The California Wine Club offers subscriptions from outside the region. Even abroad, they primarily work with small, family-owned wineries. Discovering great wine from outside the US is harder than you’d think as it’s a competitive wine world out there, but The California Wine Club makes it easy with this subscription. Each shipment is a journey to a wine region another country.

Why not 5 stars? While the wine is very good, there has to be something that distinguishes entry-level wine subscriptions from their more-expensive brethren. Plus, if you choose white-only or red-only, you get two of the same wines in the box — we think they should be two different wines.

Are there any deals? For you? Yes! If you’re buying for yourself, you can take advantage of 50% off your first order with our exclusive coupon code WCRHALF (save $32.50). As a gift? Yes! Get free shipping on all International Series gift orders of three months or longer through December 31, 2017

Shipment details: $179 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is $10.50 extra to most locations. Delivered quarterly.

Gold Medal Diamond Series Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Gold Medal Wine Club?

Is the wine any good? Yes, the best quality wine money can buy. This Diamond Series wine subscription offers mostly red wines rated 93 points or more.

19. The Pacific Northwest Series from The California Wine Club

Shipment details: $85 / shipment for two bottles (the price varies when buying for yourself), shipping is $14 extra. Delivered every other month or quarterly. Choose red wine or a mix of red and white.

The Pacific Northwest Series Shipment

What’s special about The California Wine Club:

Is the wine any good? Mostly, yes, it’s quite good. Despite it’s name, The California Wine Club offers subscriptions from outside the region. They primarily work with small, family-owned wineries and for this subscription the wines come from Oregon and Washington. The California Wine Club makes it easy to learn about these two wine regions.

Why not 5 stars? If you choose red-only, you get two of the same wines in the box — we think they should be two different wines.

20. The Limited Series from The Original Wine of the Month Club®

Shipment details: $44.96 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is extra and is based on your location. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

The Limited Series Subscription Shipment

What’s special about The Original Wine of the Month Club®? Well, as you might imagine, it’s the first one there ever was, started back in 1972 out of the back room at a pharmacy! The proprietor, Paul Kalemkiarian, is known for driving a hard bargain when buys those few wines that he thinks are good enough to sell in his club, and he passes those savings on to you.

Is the wine any good? Yes, their Limited Series subscription generally offers very good wine. For their audience, this is the high-end wine subscription. We find it comparable in quality to some other international club’s entry-level clubs, but it’s priced accordingly.

Why not 5 stars? While the wine is good, there isn’t anything especially unique about this wine club.

Are there any deals? If you’re giving as a gift, you can enjoy an exclusive 10% discount with coupon code BESTWINE.

21. Platinum Series from The Gold Medal Wine Club

Shipment details: $89 / shipment for two bottles of mostly red wine or $99 for two bottles of red wine, shipping is $10.50 extra to most locations. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Gold Medal Platinum Series Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Gold Medal Wine Club?

Is the wine any good? Yes, it’s quite good. Their Platinum subscription only includes wines rated 90+ points, but unlike other 90+ wine clubs, this one selects wine from a more expensive pricing tier. This is a great wine club to upgrade to when you get a taste for California red wine in the $40-50 range.

22. The Bordeaux Series from The Original Wine of the Month Club®

Shipment details: $49.99 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is extra and is based on your location. Delivered every other month. Choose red wine or a mix of red and white.

The Bordeaux Series Subscription Shipment

What’s special about The Original Wine of the Month Club®? Well, as you might imagine, it’s the first one there ever was, started back in 1972 out of the back room at a pharmacy! The proprietor, Paul Kalemkiarian, is known for driving a hard bargain when buys those few wines that he thinks are good enough to sell in his club, and he passes those savings on to you (though maybe not in this Bordeaux subscription).

Is the wine any good? Yes, this Bordeaux subscription generally offers very good wine. Bordeaux styles vary so much, as do everyone’s preferences, so it would be hard for us to say with certainty that the wine is great, but we found the selections we received to be enjoyable despite the fact that we’re not big Bordeaux wine fans.

Why not 5 stars? While the wine is very good, our own lack of Bordeaux knowledge leaves us feeling like there might be a better Bordeaux wine subscription out there if you could find it (we couldn’t).

Are there any deals? If you’re giving as a gift, you can enjoy an exclusive 10% discount with coupon code BESTWINE.

23. The Rosé Series from The Original Wine of the Month Club®

Shipment details: $39.99 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is extra and is based on your location. Delivered every other month.

The Rosé Series Subscription Shipment

What’s special about The Original Wine of the Month Club®? Well, as you might imagine, it’s the first one there ever was, started back in 1972 out of the back room at a pharmacy! The proprietor, Paul Kalemkiarian, is known for driving a hard bargain when buys those few wines that he thinks are good enough to sell in his club, and he passes those savings on to you (though maybe not in this Rosé subscription).

Is the wine any good? Yes, this rosé subscription generally offers very good wine. Rosé styles vary so much, as do everyone’s preferences, so it would be hard for us to say with certainty that the wine is great, but if you love rosé you’ll never be disappointed.

Why not 5 stars? While the wine is very good, there’s too much good inexpensive rosé on the market to wax poetic about this subscription’s quality-to-price ratio.

Are there any deals? If you’re giving as a gift, you can enjoy an exclusive 10% discount with coupon code BESTWINE.

Gold Medal Pinot Noir Series Subscription Shipment

What’s special about Gold Medal Wine Club?

Is the wine any good? Yes, it’s quite good. Pinot Noir is notoriously difficult to produce cheaply (low yields, finicky grapes) which is why you rarely see inexpensive Pinot. This Pinot Noir subscription offers up high-quality Pinot from California that really showcases all of the different nuances of the varietal and the different winemaking techniques used here. This is the best Pinot Noir wine club we’ve tried so far.

Opt for their artist-designed gift box ($5.99) and a personalized greeting card. The wines arrive wrapped in organza gift bags.

Why You Should Trust Us

You want the best information you can find on which wine subscriptions are worth your time and money and which ones aren’t. Nobody is better qualified to understand your choices than we are, and when journalists (Reuters, Forbes, NerdWallet, TheStreet.com, and The New York Post to name a few) need to do a deep dive on wine clubs they call us, not the other guys.

Did you notice how our list of best wine subscriptions looks different than all of those other lists? That’s because we consider ALL of the wine clubs, not just the ones with the splashiest advertising!

When we evalute wine subscriptions, we bring boxes to parties so we can share them with friends and find out what other people think of the wines, too. Our opinions about the wine on our website reflect a mix of whether we think the wine is of good quality, is sold to you at the right price, whether or not we liked them, and whether there’s any critical acclaim attached to them. We are strongly biased against bulk wine because it all tastes the same, if it tastes like anything other than too sweet, and it rarely tastes like what it’s supposed to. There are exceptions and we’re pleased when we find them.

How We Rate Wine Subscriptions

Each wine subscription on our site has been ranked across 11 characteristics. These rankings are then squeezed through a custom algorithm which places a weighted importance on certain aspects that make for a great wine subscription for a particular type of buyer.

For example, for the general wine consumer, we think the three most important overall traits for a wine club are the quality of the wine, the price of the actual wine that gets shipped, and opportunities to save money that are extended only to loyal wine club members.

The 11 Attributes We Use to Evaluate Define Wine Clubs

Our favorite feature of wine subscriptions? The Satisfaction Guarantee! Few wine clubs offer refunds, nobody expects returns (because it’s not legal for you to ship wine in the mail without a license), but if you don’t like your wine, most wine clubs will replace it with something else. The Satisfaction Guarantee offered at each subscription service is a big part of our rating.

On this page of best wine subscriptions, we’re also considering intangibles: Is it easy for us as marketing partners to work with this company? Does the company seem to really value its customers? Are there extra perks to subscribing to one service versus another? Is this a really big company, a small business, or a start-up? Is this a private label wine club? Are they selling bulk wine?

Maybe you’ve tried a subscription box or two in your day. Maybe you’re new to this whole subscription service concept and you’re not sure if a wine subscription is right for you. Maybe you’re a subscription veteran and you’re just looking for your next fix.
