2. Winc SubscriptionWinc

Winc Subscription

One of many, many wine subscription boxes we’ve received from Winc

Cost & Delivery: Starting at $52 / month for 4 bottles, shipping is included

Our Rating:

What’s special about Winc:

  • They produce their own wine, but it doesn’t feel like a winery club
  • Pick your wines or let them pick based on your palate profile
  • Members get all kinds of discounts to stretch your wine budget
  • They care about the environment

About the wine: While most of the wine is a great deal at $13, they offer a good selection of wine in the $14-40 price range. We recommend spending $18-25 on your red wines to really get the most bang for your buck. A significant portion of their wines come from California, but they offer wines from around the world, too (mostly New World wine regions).

Wine Gift Subscriptions: You buy gift credits and your recipient will get the full Winc experience after redeeming them.

3. Case Wine ClubThe California Wine Club

Case Wine Club

We have not received a box of the Case Club, but we have received boxes of every wine club whose wines go into these deliveries, primarily the Premier Series.

Cost & Delivery: $159 for 12 bottles, shipping is $14; Get it monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Case Club:

  • A “Love It” Guarantee — they’ll replace any bottle you don’t like at no cost
  • A small business that only works with family-owned wineries so you get access to hard-to-find, quality wine
  • Same price as other well-known 12-bottle clubs like WSJwine and TastingRoom.com, but much better wine

About the wine: They focus on artisanal wines produced primarily in California. Their Case Club aggregates selections from several of their wine subscription options. In each box, 8-12 bottles are from California and 1-4 bottles will come from Oregon, Washington, or their International option.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: This subscription isn’t set up with pre-paid options for gifting so you have to remember to cancel when you’ve spent enough.

4. Aged Cabernet SubscriptionThe California Wine Club

Aged Cabernet Subscription

A shipment we received of Aged Cabernet Subscription

Cost & Delivery: Starting at $240 / box for two bottles; shipping is $14. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Aged Cabernet Series:

  • A “Love It” Guarantee — they’ll replace any bottle you don’t like at no cost
  • A small business that only works with family-owned wineries so you get access to hard-to-find, quality wine
  • You can not find these aged Cabernet Sauvignon bottles anywhere else

About the wine: Since most of us don’t have the patience to age our wine, we rarely get access to aged Cabernet Sauvignon. The king of red wine is meant to be aged and this is the easiest way to discover perfectly-cellared 7-12 Cabernet Sauvignon from California (mostly Napa and Sonoma).

Wine Gift Subscriptions: The first box includes all kinds of extras for your favorite wine lover and the wines come wrapped in fancy paper. They now offer a special gift announcement package to present before the wine arrives.

5. 90+ Wine ClubWired For Wine

90+ Wine Club

A shipment we received of 90+ Wine Club

Cost & Delivery: $169.97 / quarter for 12 bottles, shipping is included. Delivered quarterly, choose red, white or a mix of both.

Our Rating:

What’s special about 90+ Wine Club:

  • Every wine they sell is rated at least 90 points by well-known wine critic
  • Their focus is on finding great-quality, food-friendly wines, and in the case of the club, for around $14 a bottle (on average)
  • Same price as other well-known 12-bottle clubs like WSJwine and TastingRoom.com, but much better wine

About the wine: The wine is surprisingly good for $14 a bottle! We were so impressed with this wine subscription when the first box arrived. An eclectic mix from around the world, varieties and wine regions. It was a great way to find better French wines than what’s heavily-promoted by the importers.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: This wine subscription does not offer pre-paid memberships so if you give it as a gift you have to put a reminder on your calendar to cancel.

6. Signature Wine ClubThe California Wine Club

Cost & Delivery: Starting at $121 / box for two bottles, $256 for three bottles, or $307 for four bottles; shipping is $14 for any number of bottles in the Signature Series. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Mostly red wine.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Signature Series:

  • A “Love It” Guarantee — they’ll replace any bottle you don’t like at no cost
  • A small business that only works with family-owned wineries so you get access to hard-to-find, quality wine
  • Luxury California wines not typically sold outside the winery tasting room

About the wine: This one is our favorites. We love a great bottle of wine to enjoy as a shared experience, whether we bring it to a restaurant or we’re cooking at home. It’s pricey, but these wines represent the best California wine can offer.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: The first box includes all kinds of extras for your favorite wine lover and the wines come wrapped in fancy paper. They now offer a special gift announcement package to present before the wine arrives.

7. Premier Wine ClubThe California Wine Club

Premier Wine Club

A shipment we received of Premier Wine Club

Cost & Delivery: $40.45 / box for two bottles, shipping is $14 extra. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Premier Series:

  • A “Love It” Guarantee — they’ll replace any bottle you don’t like at no cost
  • A small business that only works with family-owned wineries so you get access to hard-to-find, quality wine
  • Delivers great value on California wine

About the wine: Most of it is quite good. As you might imagine, The California Wine Club specializes in California-made wine and the Premier Series is their “entry level” subscription. At this price, $20 per bottle, we expect wine to be good, but we’re not expecting Silver Oak or Cakebread Cellars to show up in our packages. We don’t like superlatives when describing wine unless they are truly warranted — typically we find ourselves waxing poetic starting at the $40+ price-point.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: It is available as a pre-paid subscription. The first box includes all kinds of extras for your favorite wine lover and the wines come wrapped in organza gift bags. They now offer a special gift announcement package to present before the wine arrives.

9. Plonk Wine ClubPlonk Wine Club

Plonk Wine Club

A shipment we received of Plonk Wine Club

Cost & Delivery: $110 / box for four bottles, or $285 / box for 12 bottles, shipping is included. Four-bottle boxes are delivered monthly, 12-bottle boxes are delivered monthly or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Plonk Wine Club:

This is a no-frills wine subscription that is 100% focused on getting you great wine at a great price. When you upgrade from two to four bottles, you actually get four different bottles in each shipment — this is unusual among wine subscriptions. We also like that each wine is paired with recipes from Food52.com and that the pairings are wine-specific, not just for a generic wine of that grape.

About the wine: The wines are selected by Plonk’s proprietor, Etty Lewensztain, who has an excellent reputation for her killer palate. Each delivery contains an eclectic mix of wines and regions to make any wine enthusiast squeal with delight when the package arrives. We’d bet it’s as good as any "somm club" at a fraction of the price.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: It is available as a pre-paid subscription, though there isn’t a special gift presentation beyond a customized gift message.

10. International Wine SubscriptionThe California Wine Club

International Wine Subscription

A shipment we received of International Wine Subscription

Cost & Delivery: From $62 / box for two bottles, shipping is $14 extra. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine or a mix of red and white.

Our Rating:

What’s special about International Series:

  • A “Love It” Guarantee — they’ll replace any bottle you don’t like at no cost
  • A small business that only works with family-owned wineries so you get access to hard-to-find, quality wine
  • Despite the company’s California wine origins, this International club brings the same ethos of only working with small, familiy-owned wineries outside the US

About the wine: Most of it is quite good. Discovering great wine from outside the US is harder than you’d think as it’s a competitive wine world out there, but The California Wine Club makes it easy with this subscription. Each delivery is a journey to a wine region in another country.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: It is available as a pre-paid subscription. The first box includes all kinds of extras for your favorite wine lover and the wines come wrapped in organza gift bags. They now offer a special gift announcement package to present before the wine arrives.

11. Gold Wine ClubGold Medal Wine Club

Gold Wine Club

A shipment we received of Gold Wine Club

Cost & Delivery: $39 / box for two bottles, shipping is $10.50 extra to most locations. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Gold Wine Club:

  • Consistency. We’ve been receiving regular deliveries from The Gold Medal wine club for 10 years and we’ve never had a stinker — we’ve barely ever had a wine we didn’t think of highly.
  • Buy more, save more pricing. So many wine subscription companies forget that you’re their most loyal customers and that you should be rewarded when you commit to bigger orders up front. Gold Medal does not!

About the wine: Most of the wine is quite good. They [claim to] only sell award-winning California wines. Why are we qualifying that? Well, the California part is true, but not every wine on their website has its credentials listed, and frankly we don’t think relying on award-winners from competitions are the best way to choose your wine — we’ve had enough “award-winning” wines that didn’t win us over to know better.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: Take advantage of our exclusive Gold Club Gift Package: They’ll get a bonus bottle of wine in their first box (a $24 value), which also comes in their artist-designed gift box (a $5.99 value), and a personalized greeting card. The wines arrive wrapped in organza gift bags.

12. Wine by the Glass SubscriptionVineBox

Wine by the Glass Subscription

A shipment we received of Wine by the Glass Subscription

Cost & Delivery: From $72 / box for nine glasses, shipping is included. Delivered quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or anything goes.

Our Rating:

What’s special about VineBox by the Glass:

Aside from the unique wine experience of true wine tasting at home, we love the thoughtful boxes assembled by the VineBox crew. The current edition allows you to choose between a Medoc (Bordeaux, left bank) vertical of 2010, 2011, and 2012 or a Barolo comparison box. With the special edition boxes, you always go on a sommelier-led wine tour which is a super fun experience.

About the wine: Each "glass" holds 3.3 oz of wine. The wine is mostly European with an emphasis on France, Italy, and Spain. The selections are typically lesser-known but interesting grapes or wine regions and often showcase the regional specialty. These types of experiences are what sommeliers-in-training spend big bucks on, but you can enjoy the same wines with out all of the pressure to become an expert.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: This is probably our favorite wine subscription gift. It’s reasonably priced for gifts, comes in gorgeous packaging, and isn’t just a gift of wine, it’s a wine experinece.

13. Pacific Northwest Wine SubscriptionThe California Wine Club

Pacific Northwest Wine Subscription

A shipment we received of Pacific Northwest Wine Subscription

Cost & Delivery: From $68 / box for two bottles, shipping is $14 extra. Delivered every other month or quarterly. Choose red wine or a mix of red and white.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Pacific Northwest Series:

  • A “Love It” Guarantee — they’ll replace any bottle you don’t like at no cost
  • A small business that only works with family-owned wineries so you get access to hard-to-find, quality wine
  • Despite the company’s California wine origins, this Pacific Northwest club brings the same ethos of only working with small, familiy-owned wineries to Oregon and Washington

About the wine: Most of it is quite good. Discovering great wine from the U.S. #2 (Washington) and #3 (Oregon) wine regions isn’t easy depending on where you live, but The California Wine Club makes it easy with this subscription. Each delivery is a journey to the Pacific Northwest.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: It is available as a pre-paid subscription. The first box includes all kinds of extras for your favorite wine lover and the wines come wrapped in organza gift bags. They now offer a special gift announcement package to present before the wine arrives.

15. 90+ Cellars SubscriptionNinety Plus Cellars

90+ Cellars Subscription

A box we’ve received of the 90+ Cellars subscription

Cost & Delivery: $50 / month for a three-bottle wine subscription or $95 for a 6-bottle wine subscription, shipping is included.

Our Rating:

What’s special about 90+ Cellars Wine Club:

  • With a focus on finding interesting deals around the world, you'll never want for new wine regions and varieties to discover
  • You are strongly rewarded for buying volume, from saving on wine to saving on shipping

About the wine: Ninety Plus Cellars is a modern day négociant — a French term which means they procure wine in various states of production and label it as their own. This enables them, like competitors Costco (Kirkland brand wines) and Cameron Hughes, to offer much lower prices on better quality wine. They offer a variety of prices and their QPR (quality-to-price ratio) is typically spot on — or in other words, you get what you pay for.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: They offer gift subscriptions paid on an ongoing basis.

16. Rosé Wine SubscriptionWine of the Month Club®

Rosé Wine Subscription

A shipment we received of Rosé Wine Subscription

Cost & Delivery: $39.99 / box for two bottles, shipping is extra and is based on your location. Delivered every other month.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Rosé Series:

Well, as you might imagine, it’s the first one there ever was, started back in 1972 out of the back room at a pharmacy! The proprietor, Paul Kalemkiarian, is known for personally tasting hundreds of wines every month. He only picks the best ones for his wine subscriptions.

About the wine: This rosé subscription generally offers very good wine. Rosé styles vary, as do everyone’s preferences. We loved what we received and if you love rosé you won’t be disappointed.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: Their quirky gift box comes free with gift orders, as do some bonus gifts in their first box. And of course, that exclusive 10% off discount we mention above comes in handy.

17. Garagiste Wine ClubGold Medal Wine Club

Garagiste Wine Club

A shipment we received of Garagiste Wine Club

Cost & Delivery: $75 / box for two bottles of mostly red wine or $85 for two bottles of red wine, shipping is $10.50 extra to most locations. Delivered every other month or quarterly.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Garagiste Wine Club:

  • Consistency. We’ve been receiving regular boxes from The Gold Medal wine club for 10 years and we’ve never had a stinker — we’ve barely ever had a wine we didn’t think of highly.
  • Buy more, save more pricing. So many wine subscription companies forget that you’re their most loyal customers and that you should be rewarded when you commit to bigger orders up front. Gold Medal does not!

About the wine: The wine is quite good but it’s also fun. The word Garagiste refers to tiny producers (making wine out of a “garage”); for a curious wine drinker who wants to be in the know or get access to wine not available anywhere else (that also isn’t private labelled or bulk wine), this is a very cool wine subscription. You’ll discover California’s newest and smallest producers of Rhone varietals, Pinot Noir, and every kind of red blend imaginable.

18. Pinot Noir Wine SubscriptionGold Medal Wine Club

Pinot Noir Wine Subscription

A shipment we received of Pinot Noir Wine Subscription

Cost & Delivery: $74 / box for two bottles or $148 for four bottles, shipping is $10.50 extra to most locations. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Pinot Noir Wine Club:

  • Consistency. We’ve been receiving regular deliveries from The Gold Medal wine club for 10 years and we’ve never had a stinker — we’ve barely ever had a wine we didn’t think of highly.
  • Buy more, save more pricing. So many wine subscription companies forget that you’re their most loyal customers and that you should be rewarded when you commit to bigger orders up front. Gold Medal does not!

About the wine: Pinot Noir is notoriously difficult to produce cheaply (low yields, finicky grapes) which is why you rarely see inexpensive Pinot. This Pinot Noir Wine Club offers up high-quality Pinot from California that really showcases all of the different nuances of the varietal and the different winemaking techniques used here. This is the best Pinot Noir wine club we’ve tried so far.

19. Firstleaf Wine SubscriptionFirstleaf

Firstleaf Wine Subscription

A shipment we received of Firstleaf Wine Subscription

Cost & Delivery: $79.95 / box for six bottles, shipping is included. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Firstleaf Club:

A personalized wine subscription, this service gets 4.5 stars despite the wine being sort of meh. There isn’t anything wrong with the wine, and for $15 a bottle it’s about what we expect — comparable to competitor subscriptions — but it’s disappointing to get every aspect of a wine subscription box service right and cheap out on the wine. They’re hoping personalization ends up being more important than high-quality wine, and that might be true for some consumers.

About the wine: The wine is primarily what we call "bulk" wine, which means it was produced by third parties who don’t put their own label on the wine. Without that level of transparency and branding, the wine can be sold for much cheaper than expected retail prices using techniques that a small-production winery would avoid. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t great.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: You can now buy electronic gift cards for Firstleaf in values of $25-200. The gift card can be used toward wine bottles from their online store or toward a subscription.

20. Champagne SubscriptionHenri’s Reserve

Champagne Subscription

A shipment we received of Champagne Subscription

Cost & Delivery: $146 / box for two bottles of grower Champagne, shipping is included. Delivered every other month or quarterly.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Henri’s Champagne:

  • Consistency. Aside from the delightful French flair, this is the only true Champagne subscription we know of.
  • It’s not just Champagne, but it’s grower Champagne, which is sort of the fancy way of saying the Champagne is artisanal, like family-owned boutique wineries in the US.

About the wine: Fabulous! Not that we have anything against the big famous Champagne houses (Veuve Clicquot, Moet & Chandon, Roederer, etc.) but we’re big fans of interesting and hand-crafted when it comes to wine. The Champagnes you’ll get in a subscription from Henri’s are imported, not sold at major retailers, and sometimes not anywhere else.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions and lovely gift wrap for an even more impressive presentation.

21. The World of Wine SubscriptionVinesse

The World of Wine Subscription

A shipment we received of The World of Wine Subscription

Cost & Delivery: $50 / box for three bottles or $105 / box for six bottles, shipping is extra. Delivered 3 times per year, 4 times per year, or 8 times per year.

Our Rating:

What’s special about The World of Wine:

  • Vinesse is part of a larger conglomerate of wine companies, and this is their wine club division. Their industry clout gives them special opportunities to create savings for their members.
  • Vinesse has a very generous bottle replacement policy

About the wine: The nature of the subscription is that each delivery focuses on a different wine region, so you may not always love every bottle and every region. It’s a great way to learn about different wine regions around the world. This is another widely overlooked wine subscription. It likely has to do with a less-than-shiny reputation the company for some of its other wine clubs, but this one is actually quite good and the wines are sourced differently than their other clubs.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions but no gift-wrap. You can include a custom gift message in the first shipment.

  • Tiny producers from areas like Napa, Sonoma, and other northern California wine regions
  • Big name winemakers like Steve Matthiason, Rebekah Wineburg, and Celia Welch
  • Small, family-owned wine seller working with small businesses

About the wine: Very high-end wine from prestigious winemakers and wineries. If you are into the "New California" style of wine, this is a can't miss wine club for you to join.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: While they do not explicitly offer a gift subscription, their hands-on customer service means if you order multiple wine clubs at checkout, you will get a call or an email inquiring if you meant to order three shipments to one person or to join the subscription for three different people.

23. Bubbles & Rosé SubscriptionVinley Market

Bubbles & Rosé Subscription

A shipment we received of Bubbles & Rosé Subscription

Cost & Delivery: $59 / month for two bottles, shipping is included.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Bubbles & Rosé:

Vinley Market is a female-oriented brand. On the surface that means feminine packaging, but at it’s core it’s thinking more about what women want from a wine subscription in terms of wine selection and educational materials.

About the wine: The sommeliers who choose the wine for Vinley Market are interested in wines they like and that seem like a bargain compared to similarly priced wines. Additionally, this subscription is unique in its combination of sparkling and still rosé. We’d happily buy the Bubbles & Rosé subscription for our favorite wine lovers.

Wine Gift Subscriptions: They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions but no gift-wrap. You can include a custom gift message in the first box.

Cost & Delivery: $49 / box for three bottles or $79 / box for six botles, shipping is included. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Our Rating:

What’s special about Wine Awesomeness:

  • Themed wine subscription makes for a fun unboxing
  • Surprisingly good quality wine for this price , especially since it is not bulk wine
  • The Backlabel magazine is a full-color booklet explaining the theme and providing tasting notes

Why You Should Trust Us

You want the best information you can find on which wine subscriptions are worth your time and money and which ones aren’t. Nobody is better qualified to understand your choices than we are, and when journalists (Reuters, Forbes, NerdWallet, TheStreet.com, and The New York Post to name a few) need to do a deep dive on wine clubs they call us, not the other guys.

Did you notice how our list of best wine subscriptions looks different than all of those other lists? That’s because we consider ALL of the wine clubs, not just the ones with the splashiest advertising!

When we evalute wine subscriptions, we bring boxes to parties so we can share them with friends and find out what other people think of the wines, too. Our opinions about the wine on our website reflect a mix of whether we think the wine is of good quality, is sold to you at the right price, whether or not we liked them, and whether there’s any critical acclaim attached to them. We are strongly biased against bulk wine because it all tastes the same, is often on the sweet side, and it rarely tastes like what it’s supposed to. There are exceptions and we’re pleased when we find them.

5 Reasons this list is better than the others

  1. We’ve tasted wine from every subscription box on this list
  2. We include only 4.5-star+ wine subscriptions from the 100s we’ve reviewed
  3. There is a full review for every wine club featured here
  4. We update this list every time we review a new wine subscription
  5. We give you wine subscription gift details and tips

Like other subscription review sites, we’ll get paid if you click our links and join or give a wine subscription.

How We Rate Wine Subscriptions

Each wine subscription on our site has been ranked across 10 characteristics. These rankings are then squeezed through a custom algorithm which places a weighted importance on certain aspects that make for a great wine subscription for a particular type of buyer.

For example, for the general wine consumer, we think the three most important overall traits for a wine club are the quality of the wine, the price of the actual wine that gets shipped, and opportunities to save money that are extended only to loyal wine club members.

The 10 Criteria We Use to Evaluate Define Wine Clubs

  • Satisfaction Guarantee
  • Convenience
  • Personalization
  • Quality of Wine
  • Price of Wine
  • Discount Opportunities
  • Customer Service Record
  • Curation Process
  • Uniqueness of the Club
  • Wine Education

Our favorite feature of wine subscriptions? The Satisfaction Guarantee! Few wine clubs offer refunds, nobody expects returns (because it’s not legal for you to ship wine in the mail without a license), but if you don’t like your wine, most wine clubs will replace it with something else. The Satisfaction Guarantee offered at each subscription service is a big part of our rating.

On this page of best wine subscriptions, we’re also considering intangibles: Is it easy for us as marketing partners to work with this company? Does the company seem to really value its customers? Are there extra perks to subscribing to one service versus another? Is this a really big company, a small business, or a start-up? Is this a private label wine club? Are they selling bulk wine?
