1. Winc Wine Subscription Box

Shipment details: Starting at $52 / month for 4 bottles, shipping is included

Winc Wine Subscription Box

One of many, many wine subscription boxes we’ve received from Winc

What’s special about Winc:

About the wine: While most of the wine is a great deal at $13, they offer a good selection of wine in the $14-40 price range. We recommend spending $18-25 on your red wines to really get the most bang for your buck. A significant portion of their wines come from California, but they offer wines from around the world, too (mostly New World wine regions).

Coupons & promo codes: If you buy through our website, you get $25 in wine credits toward your first order. That’s almost 50% off and you can’t get a better deal from Winc or any other website. No coupon needed.

Gift Review: You buy gift credits and your recipient will get the full Winc experience after redeeming them.

Signature Series from The California Wine Club

A shipment we received of Signature Series from The California Wine Club

What’s special about Signature Series:

About the wine: This one is our favorites. We love a great bottle of wine to enjoy as a shared experience, whether we bring it to a restaurant or we’re cooking at home. It’s pricey, but these wines represent the best California wine can offer.

Coupons & promo codes: If you’re buying for yourself, you can take advantage of 50% off your first order with our exclusive coupon code WCRHALF (savings up to $136). If you’re giving a gift, give two bonus bottles on all Signature Series gift orders through Dec 31, 2018 with coupon code EXTRAWINE.

3. Aged Cabernet Series from The California Wine Club

Shipment details: Starting at $240 / shipment for two bottles; shipping is $14. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Aged Cabernet Series from The California Wine Club

A shipment we received of Aged Cabernet Series from The California Wine Club

What’s special about Aged Cabernet Series:

About the wine: Since most of us don’t have the patience to age our wine, we rarely get access to aged Cabernet Sauvignon. The king of red wine is meant to be aged and this is the easiest way to discover perfectly-cellared 7-12 Cabernet Sauvignon from California (mostly Napa and Sonoma).

Coupons & promo codes: If you’re buying for yourself, you can take advantage of 50% off your first order with our exclusive coupon code WCRHALF ($170 savings). If you’re giving a gift, give two bonus bottles on all Signature Series gift orders through Dec 31, 2018 with coupon code EXTRAWINE.

4. Case Club from The California Wine Club

Shipment details: $159 for 12 bottles, shipping is $14; Get it monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Case Club from The California Wine Club

We have not received a shipment of the Case Club, but we have received shipments of every wine club whose wines go into these shipments, primarily the Premier Series.

What’s special about Case Club:

About the wine: They focus on artisanal wines produced primarily in California. Their Case Club aggregates selections from several of their wine subscription options. In each shipment 8-12 bottles are from California and 1-4 bottles will come from Oregon, Washington, or their International Series.

Coupons & promo codes: This subscription doesn’t have a deal, but there’s a really good reason why. The California Wine Club has slashed their normal subscription prices in half to reward you for buying a case at a time.

Gift Review: This subscription isn’t set up with pre-paid options for gifting so you have to remember to cancel when you’ve spent enough.

5. 90+ Wine Club from Wired For Wine®

90+ Wine Club from Wired For Wine®

A shipment we received of 90+ Wine Club from Wired For Wine®

What’s special about 90+ Wine Club:

About the wine: The wine is surprisingly good for $14 a bottle! We were so impressed with this wine subscription when the first box arrived. An eclectic mix from around the world, varieties and wine regions. It was a great way to find better French wines than what’s heavily-promoted by the importers.

Coupons & promo codes: These wines are already discounted so no extra deals are available.

Gift Review: This wine subscription does not offer pre-paid memberships so if you give it as a gift you have to put a reminder on your calendar to cancel.

6. The Premier Series from The California Wine Club

Shipment details: $40.45 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is $14 extra. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

The Premier Series from The California Wine Club

A shipment we received of The Premier Series from The California Wine Club

What’s special about Premier Series:

About the wine: Most of it is quite good. As you might imagine, The California Wine Club specializes in California-made wine and the Premier Series is their “entry level” subscription. At this price, $20 per bottle, we expect wine to be good, but we’re not expecting Silver Oak or Cakebread Cellars to show up in our packages. We don’t like superlatives when describing wine unless they are truly warranted — typically we find ourselves waxing poetic starting at the $40+ price-point.

Coupons & promo codes: There is almost always a deal available for The Premier Series. Because they change frequently, we recommend you check our review page for current offers.

Gift Review: It is available as a pre-paid subscription. The first shipment includes all kinds of extras for your favorite wine lover and the wines come wrapped in organza gift bags. They now offer a special gift announcement package to present before the wine arrives.

7. Plonk Wine Club

Shipment details: $110 / month for four bottles, or $285 / shipment for 12 bottles, shipping is included. Four-bottle shipments are delivered monthly, 12-bottle shipments are delivered monthly or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Plonk Wine Club

A shipment we received of Plonk Wine Club

What’s special about Plonk:

This is a no-frills wine subscription that is 100% focused on getting you great wine at a great price. When you upgrade from two to four bottles, you actually get four different bottles in each shipment — this is unusual among wine subscriptions. We also like that each wine is paired with recipes from Food52.com and that the pairings are wine-specific, not just for a generic wine of that grape.

About the wine: The wines are selected by Plonk’s proprietor, Etty Lewensztain, who has an excellent reputation for her killer palate. Each shipment contains an eclectic mix of wines and regions to make any wine enthusiast squeal with delight when the package arrives. We’d bet it’s as good as any "somm club" at a fraction of the price.

Coupons & promo codes: New members can save $10 with coupon code NEWMEMBER and there’s sometimes a deal around major holidays. You do get a free double-jointed waiters’ corkscrew in your first shipment and if you’re like us, once you try it, you’ll never go back to your lever corkscrew.

Gift Review: It is available as a pre-paid subscription, though there isn’t a special gift presentation beyond a customized gift message.

8. The International Series from The California Wine Club

Shipment details: From $62 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is $14 extra. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine or a mix of red and white.

The International Series from The California Wine Club

A shipment we received of The International Series from The California Wine Club

What’s special about International Series:

About the wine: Most of it is quite good. Discovering great wine from outside the US is harder than you’d think as it’s a competitive wine world out there, but The California Wine Club makes it easy with this subscription. Each shipment is a journey to a wine region in another country.

Coupons & promo codes: If you’re buying for yourself, you can take advantage of 50% off your first order with our exclusive coupon code WCRHALF (save $32.50). If you’re giving a gift, Get two bonus bottles on all International Series gift orders through December 31, 2018 with coupon code EXTRAWINE

9. Gold Series from Gold Medal Wine Club

Shipment details: $39 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is $10.50 extra to most locations. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Gold Series from Gold Medal Wine Club

A shipment we received of Gold Series from Gold Medal Wine Club

What’s special about Gold Series:

About the wine: Most of the wine is quite good. They [claim to] only sell award-winning California wines. Why are we qualifying that? Well, the California part is true, but not every wine on their website has its credentials listed, and frankly we don’t think relying on award-winners from competitions are the best way to choose your wine — we’ve had enough “award-winning” wines that didn’t win us over to know better.

Coupons & promo codes: Unfortunately there are no coupon codes to be had, but the wines are already priced below winery retail, but the aforementioned “Buy More, Save More” pricing structure means you can save when you upgrade to four bottles or buy a longer-term pre-paid subscription.

Gift Review: Take advantage of our exclusive Gold Series Gift Package: They’ll get a bonus bottle of wine in their first shipment (a $24 value), which also comes in their artist-designed gift box (a $5.99 value), and a personalized greeting card. The wines arrive wrapped in organza gift bags.

10. VineBox Wine by the Glass Subscription

Shipment details: From $72 / box for nine glasses, shipping is included. Delivered quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or anything goes.

VineBox Wine by the Glass Subscription

A shipment we received of VineBox Wine by the Glass Subscription

What’s special about VineBox:

Aside from the unique wine experience of true wine tasting at home, we love the thoughtful boxes assembled by the VineBox crew. The current edition allows you to choose between a Medoc (Bordeaux, left bank) vertical of 2010, 2011, and 2012 or a Barolo comparison box. With the special edition boxes, you always go on a sommelier-led wine tour which is a super fun experience.

About the wine: Each "glass" holds 3.3 oz of wine. The wine is mostly European with an emphasis on France, Italy, and Spain. The selections are typically lesser-known but interesting grapes or wine regions and often showcase the regional specialty. These types of experiences are what sommeliers-in-training spend big bucks on, but you can enjoy the same wines with out all of the pressure to become an expert.

Coupons & promo codes: Unfortunately there are no deals to be had, but if you subscribe for two people annually you end up saving 25% vs if you just ordered one-time boxes. We always give a thumbs up to "Buy more, save more" pricing.

Gift Review: This is probably our favorite wine subscription gift. It’s reasonably priced for gift-giving, comes in gorgeous packaging, and isn’t just a gift of wine, it’s a wine experinece.

The Pacific Northwest Series from The California Wine Club

A shipment we received of The Pacific Northwest Series from The California Wine Club

What’s special about Pacific Northwest Series:

About the wine: Most of it is quite good. Discovering great wine from the U.S. #2 (Washington) and #3 (Oregon) wine regions isn’t easy depending on where you live, but The California Wine Club makes it easy with this subscription. Each shipment is a journey to the Pacific Northwest.

12. Special Selections from Uncorked Ventures

Shipment details: $115 / shipment for two-three red wines, shipping is included. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Special Selections from Uncorked Ventures

It has been a while since we received a shipment of Special Selections so this is a picture of the last shipment we received of Uncorked Ventures Exploration Subscription

What’s special about Special Selections:

About the wine: The wine is excellent. It’s fascinating to see how a winemaker curates a wine club that consists of other winemaker’s product. He clearly enjoys tiny productions, unusual grapes, and wine of character. Most wine clubs can’t fulfill this kind of selection, but Mark’s insider connections make it possible.

Coupons & promo codes: There is supposed to be a 15% off coupon for your first order (use this when buying a pre-paid subscription!) but it isn’t working right now. We’re looking into it.

Gift Review: This wine subscription makes a great gift, but it doesn’t come with gift frills. You can pre-pay for a gift subscription and include a custom gift message in the first shipment.

14. Nocking Point Wine Subscription

Shipment details: $99.99 / shipment for three bottles, shipping is included. Bonus gifts of coffee and a t-shirt in every shipment. Delivered quarterly.

Nocking Point Wine Subscription

A shipment we received of Nocking Point Wine Subscription

What’s special about Nocking Point:

There are few really neat things about the Nocking Point wine subscription, not the least of which is that one of the co-founders is Stephen Amell from The Arrow. Fortunately, Stephen has a wine nerd friend who showed him the ropes and opened up shop for them. Also each shipment contains a wine collaboration with one of their celebrity friends: Jason Momoa, Emily Bett, and Zachary Levi to name a few.

About the wine: An eclectic selection of wines, mostly retailing around $25 a bottle. The wines are primarily from the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington), but since Nocking Point partners with a larger company to produce their wines, they also get amazing sparkling wine from Gruet Winery in New Mexico. Some of the wines are excellent, some should have been better, but most are exactly what you want from a $25 bottle of wine — good quality, good taste.

Coupons & promo codes: Save $20 off your first wine subscription box with code WCR at checkout.

Gift Review: This wine subscription is not a suitable for a gift as there isn’t a pre-paid option or gift wrap available.

15. Limited Series from Wine of the Month Club®

Shipment details: $44.96 / shipment for two bottles, shipping is extra and is based on your location. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

Limited Series from Wine of the Month Club®

This is the latest shipment we received from The Limited Series however they no longer use this box and they also don’t include the free corkscrew as a gift any longer.

What’s special about Limited Series:

Well, as you might imagine, it’s the first one there ever was, started back in 1972 out of the back room at a pharmacy! The proprietor, Paul Kalemkiarian, is known for personally tasting hundreds of wines every month. He only picks the best ones for his wine subscriptions.

About the wine: Their Limited Series subscription generally offers very good wine. For their audience, this is the high-end wine subscription. We find it comparable in quality to some other companies’ international entry-level offerings, and it’s priced accordingly.

Coupons & promo codes: If you’re giving as a gift, you can enjoy an exclusive 10% discount with coupon code BESTWINE. Insider Tip: You can give a "gift" to yourself, too.

Gift Review: Their quirky gift box comes free with gift orders, as do some bonus gifts in their first shipment. Please note, the burgundy-colored box pictured is not the current gift box and the corkscrew is not the current bonus gift.

About the wine: This Napa wine subscription generally offers very good wine. Napa is a great wine region for more than just Cab, so we really like that this Napa club doesn’t offer just Cabernet Sauvignon. Expect pedigreed red blends and white wines, too (choose all reds or a mix of red and white wine).

About the wine: Their Platinum subscription only includes wines rated 90+ points, but unlike other 90+ wine clubs, this one selects wine from a more expensive pricing tier. This is a great wine club to upgrade to when you get a taste for California red wine in the $40-50 range.

20. Firstleaf Wine Subscription

Shipment details: $79.95 / shipment for six bottles, shipping is included. Delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. Choose red wine, white wine, or a mix of both.

Firstleaf Wine Subscription

A shipment we received of Firstleaf Wine Subscription

What’s special about Firstleaf Club:

A personalized wine subscription, this service gets 4.5 stars despite the wine being sort of meh. There isn’t anything wrong with the wine, and for $15 a bottle it’s about what we expect — comparable to competitor subscriptions — but it’s disappointing to get every aspect of a wine subscription box service right and cheap out on the wine. They’re hoping personalization ends up being more important than high-quality wine, and that might be true for some consumers.

About the wine: The wine is primarily what we call "bulk" wine, which means it was produced by third parties who don’t put their own label on the wine. Without that level of transparency and branding, the wine can be sold for much cheaper than expected retail prices using techniques that a small-production winery would avoid. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t great.

Coupons & promo codes: Sign up today and try three wines selected based on your preferences for just $15 + $4.95 shipping. Future club shipments are six bottles for $79.95 + $9.95 shipping. No coupon needed, just use our links.

21. Garagiste Series from Gold Medal Wine Club

Shipment details: $75 / shipment for two bottles of mostly red wine or $85 for two bottles of red wine, shipping is $10.50 extra to most locations. Delivered every other month or quarterly.

Garagiste Series from Gold Medal Wine Club

A shipment we received of Garagiste Series from Gold Medal Wine Club

What’s special about Garagiste Series:

About the wine: The wine is quite good but it’s also fun. The word Garagiste refers to tiny producers (making wine out of a “garage”); for a curious wine drinker who wants to be in the know or get access to wine not available anywhere else (that also isn’t private labelled or bulk wine), this is a very cool wine subscription. You’ll discover California’s newest and smallest producers of Rhone varietals, Pinot Noir, and every kind of red blend imaginable.

Pinot Noir Series from Gold Medal Wine Club

A shipment we received of Pinot Noir Series from Gold Medal Wine Club

What’s special about Pinot Noir Series:

About the wine: Pinot Noir is notoriously difficult to produce cheaply (low yields, finicky grapes) which is why you rarely see inexpensive Pinot. This Pinot Noir subscription offers up high-quality Pinot from California that really showcases all of the different nuances of the varietal and the different winemaking techniques used here. This is the best Pinot Noir wine club we’ve tried so far.

23. GrapeSeed Selections Subscription

Shipment details: $150 / shipment for four to six bottles, shipping is extra and varies by your location. Delivered quarterly. A mix of red and white wine.

GrapeSeed Selections Subscription

A shipment we received of GrapeSeed Selections Subscription

What’s special about GrapeSeed Selections:

Sort of a winery, GrapeSeed hires esteemed winemakers primarily in Northern California, to produce "side project" wines under the GrapeSeed brands. They work with interesting winemakers like Jessica Boone, Jean Hoefliger, and Matt Smith with an aim to fund their ideas and encourage their creativity. GrapeSeed members enjoy a free glass of méthode champenoise sparkling wine any time in their Healdsburg tasting room and art gallery.

About the wine: All of the wine we received was excellent, and some of their wines have gone on to win their own awards and accolades. There is a range of price points in each shipment and the number of bottles varies depending on what they pack in each box.

Coupons & promo codes: Free shipping! Exclusive free shipping offer is good one per customer and includes all items in your order. Use promo code WCR_REWARD at checkout. 24. Champagne Subscription from Henri’s Reserve

Shipment details: $146 / shipment for two bottles of grower Champagne, shipping is included. Delivered every other month or quarterly.

Champagne Subscription from Henri’s Reserve

A shipment we received of Champagne Subscription from Henri’s Reserve

What’s special about Champagne Club:

About the wine: Fabulous! Not that we have anything against the big famous Champagne houses (Veuve Clicquot, Moet & Chandon, Roederer, etc.) but we’re big fans of interesting and hand-crafted when it comes to wine. The Champagnes you’ll get in a subscription from Henri’s are imported, not sold at major retailers, and sometimes not anywhere else.

Coupons & promo codes: Sorry, no discounts on these gems.

Gift Review: They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions and lovely gift wrap for an even more impressive presentation.

25. The World of Wine Subscription from Vinesse

Shipment details: $50 / shipment for three bottles or $105 / shipment for six bottles, shipping is extra. Delivered 3 times per year, 4 times per year, or 8 times per year.

The World of Wine Subscription from Vinesse

A shipment we received of The World of Wine Subscription from Vinesse

What’s special about The World of Wine:

About the wine: The nature of the subscription is that each shipment focuses on a different wine region, so you may not always love every bottle and every region. It’s a great way to learn about different wine regions around the world. This is another widely overlooked wine subscription. It likely has to do with a less-than-shiny reputation the company for some of its other wine clubs, but this one is actually quite good and the wines are sourced differently than their other clubs.

Coupons & promo codes: Save $120 on your first shipment (six wines are only $9.75 each) and get two bonus bottles of a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir ($50 value). Another exclusive deal for our readers!

Gift Review: They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions but no gift-wrap. You can include a custom gift message in the first shipment.

26. Bubbles & Rosé from Vinley Market

Shipment details: $59 / month for two bottles, shipping is included.

Bubbles & Rosé from Vinley Market

A shipment we received of Bubbles & Rosé from Vinley Market

What’s special about Bubbles & Rosé:

Vinley Market is a female-oriented brand. On the surface that means feminine packaging, but at it’s core it’s thinking more about what women want from a wine subscription in terms of wine selection and educational materials.

About the wine: The sommeliers who choose the wine for Vinley Market are interested in wines they like and that seem like a bargain compared to similarly priced wines. Additionally, this subscription is unique in its combination of sparkling and still rosé. We’d happily buy the Bubbles & Rosé subscription for our favorite wine lovers.

Coupons & promo codes: Save 10% on your first order at Vinley Market with coupon code WCR2017 (it still works in 2018, we checked on 1/9/18).

Gift Review: They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions but no gift-wrap. You can include a custom gift message in the first shipment.

27. Wine Down Box

Shipment details: $70 / month for one bottle with professionally-paired cheese and charcuterie, shipping is included.

Wine Down Box

A shipment we’ve received of the Wine DownBox subscription — we didn’t photograph this one in our cellar because it’s hard to have a charcuterie party when you’re stuffed into the very cold wine room!

What’s special about Wine Down Box:

About the wine: The wine and pairings are very good. Sometimes you read about a pairing and your eyebrow goes up as the skepticism runs through your mind. At first glance we raised an eyebrow to our last shipment which paired a Merlot with garlic peppercorn cheese, but we were delighted by how terrific the pairing was once we tried it. Good pairings make both ingredients better and this fully did. The Barolo salami from Alle-Pia also helped round out the deliciousness (my mouth is watering as I type this).

Coupons & promo codes: There are always a few deals running, so please check our full review for details.

Gift Review: They offer pre-paid gift subscriptions and the impressive box makes a great presentation.

Why You Should Trust Us

You want the best information you can find on which wine subscriptions are worth your time and money and which ones aren’t. Nobody is better qualified to understand your choices than we are, and when journalists (Reuters, Forbes, NerdWallet, TheStreet.com, and The New York Post to name a few) need to do a deep dive on wine clubs they call us, not the other guys.

Did you notice how our list of best wine subscriptions looks different than all of those other lists? That’s because we consider ALL of the wine clubs, not just the ones with the splashiest advertising!

When we evalute wine subscriptions, we bring boxes to parties so we can share them with friends and find out what other people think of the wines, too. Our opinions about the wine on our website reflect a mix of whether we think the wine is of good quality, is sold to you at the right price, whether or not we liked them, and whether there’s any critical acclaim attached to them. We are strongly biased against bulk wine because it all tastes the same, is often on the sweet side, and it rarely tastes like what it’s supposed to. There are exceptions and we’re pleased when we find them.

How We Rate Wine Subscriptions

Each wine subscription on our site has been ranked across 11 characteristics. These rankings are then squeezed through a custom algorithm which places a weighted importance on certain aspects that make for a great wine subscription for a particular type of buyer.

For example, for the general wine consumer, we think the three most important overall traits for a wine club are the quality of the wine, the price of the actual wine that gets shipped, and opportunities to save money that are extended only to loyal wine club members.

The 11 Attributes We Use to Evaluate Define Wine Clubs

Our favorite feature of wine subscriptions? The Satisfaction Guarantee! Few wine clubs offer refunds, nobody expects returns (because it’s not legal for you to ship wine in the mail without a license), but if you don’t like your wine, most wine clubs will replace it with something else. The Satisfaction Guarantee offered at each subscription service is a big part of our rating.

On this page of best wine subscriptions, we’re also considering intangibles: Is it easy for us as marketing partners to work with this company? Does the company seem to really value its customers? Are there extra perks to subscribing to one service versus another? Is this a really big company, a small business, or a start-up? Is this a private label wine club? Are they selling bulk wine?
