When it comes to red wine, everyone has their favorites. Whether you prefer a Napa Cab, a California Red Blend, a Pinot Noir, rosso wines from Italy, rouge from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Beaujolais, or beyond — you can find thousands of red wines to choose from here.
Some of my favorite red wine stores are Wine Access for unusual and often very affordable wines,
The Magnum (1.5 L and twice the size of a regular bottle) is a beloved wine size among wine collectors and winemakers alike. One of its best properties — and the reason collectors prize them — is that the oxygen-to-wine ratio is lower than in regular bottles so wines age more slowly, giving them time to morph into their mature selves before becoming too oxidized.
Another interesting thing about magnums is that very often winemakers will put their best barrels of a wine into magnum, to celebrate their excellence — these are often labeled "Reserve" or "Winemaker’s Selection." (Side note: when a winemaker makes a wine, they typically make more than one barrel of it, and not all barrels come out the same.)
While some magnums cost twice the size of a regular bottle, you’ll often pay a premium for the privilege of the party-sized option. Just keep in mind, they won’t fit in a standard wine fridge or cellar compartment and should be kept on their side (or upside down) while aging.
Want to go even bigger? You can find Double Magnums (3L) and Imperials (6L) sizes, too. The latter is almost always Champagne. The former includes Boxed Wine.
