Join a California wine of the month club

On this page you'll find all of the California wine clubs we've reviewed. Our ratings system looks at quality-to-price ratio, shipping costs, uniqueness, and custom features. Wherever possible, prices include shipping costs, but rarely include sales tax. Be sure to select the state you're shipping to, as not all wine clubs can ship to all states.

Platinum Wine Club

by Gold Medal Wine Club
All-Around Rating:

For Gifts Early Bird Holiday Sale. The lowest prices of the year. Save on all gifts of 3 months or longer, up to 18% on 12-month gifts. Until Nov 15. Click for This Deal.

Overview: If you're ready to upgrade to a higher quality wine from California and explore what all of the artisanal buzz is about, this should be your first stop. These mostly red wines from the best small wineries typically retail in the $35-90 range but you pay a much lower price to have them delivered. Joining for yourself means variable shipment prices, but if you buy as a pre-paid gift subscription you'll know your price in advance. Hint: Buy yourself a pre-paid gift subscription instead of joining as an ongoing member.

What We Love: We spend a lot of time wine tasting in California and are personally familiar with many of the wineries shipped in Gold Medal's Platinum Series. They ship our favorites and must-try wines like Dilécta GSM from Paso Robles, Volker Eisele Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and Frank Family Petite Sirah from Napa to name a few.

Wine Club Gift Info: With elegant gift packaging as an upgrade option, you can make any wine subscription gift really stand out. Send a personalized greeting card ahead or ship it to yourself to present on the big day. When the wine arrives, the first shipment's bottles are wrapped in organza and presented in a beautiful artist-designed gift box.

Pinot Noir Wine Club

by Gold Medal Wine Club
All-Around Rating:

For Gifts Early Bird Holiday Sale. The lowest prices of the year. Save on all gifts of 3 months or longer, up to 18% on 12-month gifts. Until Nov 15. Click for This Deal.

Overview: Pinot Noir is one of the most beloved red wine grapes and this Pinot of the month club is the best one for discovering Pinot Noir from California, Oregon, and Washington. Discover boutique wineries producing world-class Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara, Sonoma, and other regions around California. Stunning Pinot from Joseph Jewell, Dragonette Cellars, and Kessler-Haak to name a few.

What We Love: We're big fans of Pinot Noir in general, and we love how Gold Medal sources award-winning selections from small producers we may not have heard of or haven't had access to for purchasing. A membership with the Gold Medal Wine Club Pinot Noir Series takes Pinot lovers on a trip to the West Coast for wine tasting without leaving home. Check out their Pinot selection.

Wine Club Gift Info: With elegant gift packaging as an upgrade option, you can make any wine subscription gift really stand out. Send a personalized greeting card ahead or ship it to yourself to present on the big day. Garagiste Wine Club

by Gold Medal Wine Club
All-Around Rating:

For Gifts Early Bird Holiday Sale. The lowest prices of the year. Save on all gifts of 3 months or longer, up to 18% on 12-month gifts. Until Nov 15. Click for This Deal.

Overview: Garagiste is a term which describes up-and-coming winemakers who toil away creating artisanal wines in their, well not usually, garages. If you're someone who wants to be up on the latest and greatest future stars of California winemaking, try the mostly red wine selection of Garagiste wines from the Gold Medal Wine Club.

What We Love: We look forward to discovering new wineries from all over California. We know we're getting very good wine at below-retail prices and helping small family businesses grow.

GrapeSeed Selections

by GrapeSeed Wine
All-Around Rating:

Overview: Grapeseed Wine started out as a way to have customers help fund one-time wine productions by acclaimed winemakers, but now it's a wine club, too. Get preferred pricing on all of their new releases and enjoy helping stellar winemakers stretch their winemaking creativity.

What We Love: We're big fans of any group that has exclusive wines because they produced them (as opposed to buying out a full production of someone else's wine)

Wine Down Box

All-Around Rating:

Overview: Sometimes you just want a bottle of wine, some cheese and salami, and some crackers to tie all together and wind down a long work week. Enter the Wine Down Box (you see what they did there?) and add a little classy fun to your Friday nights — or someone else's as this makes a great gift!

What We Love: The wines have been excellent, and the pairings with the cheeses have been spot on. For how much hype there is around wine-and-cheese pairings in general, it's actually not that easy to pull off. And of course, we're suckers for salami.

Wine Club Gift Info: We think Wine Down Box makes a better gift than a subscription for yourself. The wine selection is excellent and the pairings are well done, so the delight of a party in a box arriving every month can't be beat. Every box comes packed for presentation and freshness.

Wildcrafted Wines

by Travelfood Curated Wines
All-Around Rating:

Overview: A wine club featuring hand-picked tiny-production wines from Napa, Sonoma, and other northern California wine regions. This “mom and pop” wine seller focuses on wines produced by well-known winemakers and made of grapes from premium vineyards.

What We Love: Their wine selection is a veritable who’s who of famous winemakers, especially their creative side projects. There aren’t many wine clubs featuring this “new California” ethos and they’re as rare as the wines they ship.

The California Series

by Wine of the Month Club ®
All-Around Rating:

Exclusive Deal For Gifts Save 10% on any wine of the month club gift. Use code BESTWINE at checkout or Click for This Deal.

Overview: From the original Wine of the Month Club (really, they're the first!) you get wine delivered every month at really low prices. The proprietor drives a hard bargain and passes those deals onto his customers. This California Series is like their mid-level wine club but it focuses only on California wine. It's perfect for people who aren't sure if they're "wine club people" and as a gift to a young wine-lover just starting to explore.

What We Love: Paul Kalemkiarian, second generation proprietor at Wine of the Month Club ™ goes out of his way to source interesting wines, and for this wine club, he only ships the best California wines he finds at this price point, after tasting hundreds each month of course.

Wine Club Gift Info: If you want to give a wine of the month club as a gift this year, but your budget is constrained, this is a good choice. You'll be giving four months for what most other clubs charge for three, and they offer a fun gift presentation, too. Also, our readers can save 10% on all pre-paid gift memberships with coupon code BESTWINE, worth at least $25.

California Treasures

by Vinesse
All-Around Rating:

Overview: California produces some of the best wines in the world, with stunning wines to sip from up and down the extra large state, but this is not the wine club to buy them from. California Treasures ships wine at $15-17 a bottle, plus shipping, but this isn't a price-point where California wine excels. It's better in the mass-produced sub-$15 price range, and at $25+.

What We Love: One of the best features of any of the Vinesse wine clubs is their tasting notes. They sometimes feel a little sparse, but you always get the basic wine information, some winemaker info, a food pairing suggestion, and most-importantly, cellaring instructions (not that we think these are cellarworthy selections).

California Classics & More

by WineExpress (Wine Enthusiast)
All-Around Rating:

Overview: From the wine sales partner for Wine Enthusiast magazine, this California club is a no-hassle way to try new red and white wines from all over the great state. The wine director at WineExpress, Josh Farrell, hand picks each wine for their subscriptions.

What We Love: WineExpress is the retail arm of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Who better to select the best wines for a wine of the month club than a company that rates wine?
