Natural wine is an idea, not an actual declaration of naturalness. Loosely speaking, it strives to be chemical free, additive free, treat the land and the humans who work with it humanely, and all done with little-to-no machine involvement in the process.
In practice, much of what we think of Natural wine is trendy. Terms like minimal intervention, native yeasts, no added sulfites, skin contact / orange, glou glou, and chillable reds abound. The truth is, all of this has been around in one form or another longer than we’ve been hip to natural wine and are standard practices at small wineries around the world (even when they don’t talk about it).
Most Natural wine is organic or biodynamic, and often dry farmed. Need more info? Check out my Useful Wine Guides on organic wine and natural wine. Love it so much you want more? Check out an organic or natural wine subscription.
