I’ve reviewed dozens of red wine subscriptions. By reviewed, I mean that unlike most wine club review sites, I’ve actually tasted the wine from each of these subscriptions (except where noted).
No matter how you want to explore red wine, there are plenty of subscriptions to choose from to suit your budget. Some subscriptions feature only red wine, like Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon. Others are regionally-focused and and offer French or California reds and red blends. Other red wine subscriptions send a little bit of everything.
The best reason to join a red wine club, as opposed to buying from a reputable store, is the Satisfaction Guarantee. Discover new red wine styles, grapes, or regions, without the risk of losing money on bad bottles. The best wine clubs will replace anything you don’t like, including the expensive stuff.
Another great reason to try a red wine membership is access to wines you won’t find in a store. Interesting wines typically come from smaller producers. Wine clubs, sometimes working with sommeliers, carefully cultivate relationships with great wineries so you can drink these gems.

Best Red Wine Clubs: $20-30 a Bottle
Well-made red wine is rarely priced below $20 a bottle. You most commonly see red wine under $20 in “New World” regions outside of California and Oregon — mostly Washington, South America, and Australia. Red wine under $20 also is common in southern France, Spain, and some parts of Italy.
The $20-30 price range is a good range to explore for red wine. Wine clubs in this range ship good quality wines, sometimes even from premium wine regions, like Bordeaux and California. Wine quality and distinctiveness are the most noticeable features in this price range, as compared to less expensive clubs.

Visit any page on this website and you’re likely to find me waxing poetic about Nakedwines.com. If I was to design a wine club myself — thinking about quality, value, and experience — it might look a lot like Nakedwines.com. Great Red Wine Gift
Plonk is a small business run by Etty Lewensztain Klein. Known in the industry for having a great palate, Etty’s focus has always been on sourcing interesting organic or biodynamic wines from small producers – and getting them to her members for less than $30 a bottle. For the adventurous red wine lover who’d rather not drop $50 a bottle, this is a fantastic wine club. Editor’s Note: This is not strictly an organic/biodynamic wine club.
You can browse the Plonk online store to see what Etty has recently shipped to her members. You’ll find a terrific selection including a Mendocino County Carignan, an Austrian red blend of Merlot and native grape Rotburger, and an old vines field blend of Garnacha, Ruffete, and Pinuela from the Castilla y Leon region in Spain.

Great Red Wine Gift
Proprietor Annie Arnold was so passionate about organic wine that she started a wine business that only deals in certified organic wines. Annie works with producers from around the world to distribute and sell organic, biodynamic, vegan, and no-sulfites added (NSA) wine. Every wine she carries is organic, but she offers a broad selection of biodynamic, vegan and NSA wines from around the world.
Unlike some of the other organic wine clubs out there, Annie proudly displays all of her wines on her website. You never have to guess who she’s working with, which means you can research the wine’s bonafides and be confident in what you’ll receive.
In the red wine section I saw options ranging from $11-57 a bottle, though the wines in her red wine club shipments average $20-25 a bottle. A very long list of grapes including a big selection of popular grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah also includes more obscure grapes like Bonarda, Cinsault, Grenache, Montepulciano, and Pinotage.
The Organic Wine Club is offered in 3-, 6-, or 12-bottle shipments, delivered monthly or quarterly. Shipping is included in all wine club prices. Prices range from $80-85 (for three bottles) to $252-272 per shipment (for 12 bottles). You can customize your wine club quite a bit, so if you have a special request, you’ll add it to your order.
The organic wine club is available as a prepaid gift subscription at the same monthly/quarterly prices. Give three or six shipments monthly or a year of wine delivered quarterly. A custom gift message is included in the first shipment.
For many red wine lovers, this price range is the sweet spot. In this price range you can find single-vineyard estate bottlings, small producers stretching the boundaries of what’s expected for a grape or region, and exceptional wines that can be cellared to perfection.
We break this price range (and the next one) into California, and everywhere else. We do this because this reflects the selection of red wine clubs available in this price range.
When it comes to red wine in this price range, the best source for California wine is Gold Medal Wine Club. Gold Medal Wine Club is a small, family run business that has been cultivating relationships with California’s smallest wineries for more than a quarter century. Two areas they excel in are Pinot Noir and micro producers (also known as Garagistes).
International Red Wine Clubs
Old world or new world, you can find some fantastic red wines in the $30-60 range. Elegant red wines with great structure and ageability (if desired) are the norm. You’ll always have a great bottle of wine on hand for any pizza, pasta, or steak dinner and you’ll likely discover some new wine regions along the way. The Bold Reds Series by MonthlyClubs.com is for red wine lovers who like a heavier-handed wine — big bold flavors with approachable but obvious tannins — this is a go-to wine club. Selections are truly International, and also include US wine regions like California regularly. Recent shipments included a Chilean Carmenere, a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva, two California Petite Sirahs, an Australian cab-dominant blend, and an Australian Shiraz.
Two-bottle shipments are delivered monthly, every other month, or quarterly. The cost is $51.95 plus $13 for shipping and handling. Sales tax is extra where applicable. The French Red Wine Club by SomMailier is a can’t miss in this price range, too. This small business’ wine club is an international family affair. Five generations of Yungs have produced wine in Bordeaux, France, and US-based proprietor Laurent Yung brings his deep-seated love of French wine to Americans via SomMailier. He imports wine from all over France to the US courtesy of his family’s impressive connections.
Browsing SomMailier’s online store is a great way to survey which red wines Laurent might ship you. Some popular selections include a Margaux (Bordeaux), a Châteauneuf du Pape, a Burgundy (Cote Chalonnaise), and a Côtes du Roussillon. Members typically pay 25% below the retail price for these wines — which are not typically available anywhere else in the US.
Choose a three-bottle membership (C’est La Vie) for $99 per shipment or a six-bottle membership (Rendez-vous) for $192 per shipment, both delivered quarterly. Note: if you upgrade to the six-bottle version, you’ll get two each of three different red wines in each shipment. Great Red Wine Gift
The Italian Wine Clubs by Roscioli are the real deal — exceptional bottles not produced for the US market ship directly from Rome to your door (by way of US Customs, of course). Roscioli is a legendary name in Rome, with the oldest continually-operating bakery in the center of Rome as the starting point. Along the way they’ve expanded into other markets and their Rimessa Roscioli (rimessa means garage in Italian) is renowned for being one of the top wine bars in all of Rome. Being a member of their wine club is like having a special Italian wine tasting right in your living room.
Roscioli introduced me to a more authentic Italian wine experience, one that features the rich viticultural history of Italy and the hundreds of native grapes that aren’t grown outside the country. Now I’m excited to explore Italian wine and discover what I’ve been missing. The red wines I received included a Schiava from Alto Adige, an Alicante-Carignano-Mourvedre blend from Toscana, a Nero di Troia from Puglia, and a fantastic Barolo (100% Nebbiolo) that made me want to try more.
For each shipment you receive you will make two equal payments. While you make four payments per year, you receive two shipments. The two-payment system helps spreads out the expense. Billing dates are: Feb 15, March 15, Aug 15 and Sept 15, but you will make your first payment when you sign up.

It’s hard not to talk about really expensive wine clubs when discussing which are the best red wine clubs. While a high price won’t always mean there’s great wine in the bottle, there are definitely times when it does. These wine clubs stake their reputations on sending outstanding wine to customers willing to pay these prices.
When you’re spending at least $60 on a bottle of wine, you probably have a pretty good idea of what you want to drink. Like the previous price range, we break these wine clubs into two groups: into California and everywhere else. These are our picks for top-of-the-line red wine subscriptions.
When the wine world talks about amazing California red wine, it’s almost often priced over $60 a bottle. Napa prices can be off the charts, especially for cult wineries and winemakers. While it’s still possible, and worthwhile, to find amazing California red wine under $60, the best vineyards and the most sought-after winemakers are usually working at these loftier prices, too.
The California Wine Club
It’s impossible for us to have a discussion about wine clubs featuring high-end California wine without discussing The California Wine Club. They’re best known for their more affordable Premier Series club, but high-end clubs are where their members get the most benefit from their amazing relationships with small California wineries. The California Wine Club offers two terrific options for big spenders: the Signature Series and the Aged Cabernet Series.
Membership includes access to a personal wine consultant, VIP Touring and Tasting at any of the featured wineries, and a Love It guarantee (they’ll make it right if there’s something wrong with your wine or you really don’t like it). These memberships both make excellent gifts, including options for announcing your gift before the wine arrives.
Bounty Hunter Red Wine Clubs
Whether you have a thirst for Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, or simply the best red wines no matter which grapes they’re made from, Bounty Hunter has a high-end wine club you’ll want to join. These three clubs all feature the best of the best from around the world, but predominantly California.
International Red Wine Clubs
For red wine lovers who want to try red wine from all over the world, these high-end red wine clubs will delight. Unlike the California clubs which are singularly focused, some of these International clubs include wines from the US as part of their wine program.

The Connoisseurs Club is $150 per shipment for two bottles, delivered quarterly. Access should not be underestimated here. My most recent shipment included a 2016 Phillipe Melka Mekerra Merlot from Knights Valley. Only 150 cases were made. I also received a 2015 Chateau Prieure-Lichine Margaux Grand Cru Classe. Given 95 or 96 points by several top critics, this Left Bank Bordeaux gem is hard to find in the US.

Great Red Wine Gift
I mentioned the Rome-based Roscioli Italian wine clubs as part of the $30-60 price range, but they also offer two top-of-the-line wine clubs which include both French and Italian wine.
